245 idles OK but dies when transmission in Drive 200 1986

I bought a 1986 245DL with 215K miles for $300 last weekend. The car is partially disabled. It idles OK but dies within 2 or 3 seconds when the automatic transmission is shifted to Drive. When it dies, I can hear a loud popping noise coming from the exhaust tail pipe and also a strange sound, like letting air out of a pressurized tank, coming from the engine compartment of the passenger side.

I have not started trouble-shooting the car and thought maybe someone out there has experienced this symptom before.

Thanks,
Michael

Sounds like the Air mass meter to me.It's the part of the big hose with the wire coming out of it, just behind your air cleaner, to the right of the radiator(looking at the grill.) To do a simple test on it,while the car is off, unplug the wire, and start the car, it should idle. when you depress the gas pedal it will try to kill out, try putting it into gear(no gas pedal) Does it do the same thing?

    Just a thought.
Does it stall when you put the car into reverse? Perhaps you have a vacuum leak causing the car to stall when you depress the brake.
    Good Luck,
    Erich
