My 93 240 has 43,000 original miles. I'm thinking it might need a minor tune-up (plugs, rotor, cap). I've already replaced the fuel filter and timing belt because it had dryrotted from not being driven. Should I replace the wires also when I do the plugs, etc.?
Should I replace the plugs with NGK or Bosch? If I do wires, which brand work well with NGK and Bosch. I looking for maximum fuel efficiency. Thanks!

I would change the oil & filter, replace the air filter (Mann) and distributor cap & rotor (Bosch). I usually get about 100k miles out of a set of Bugicord wires. A previous responder indicated that they should be changed every 50k - I'm not convinced that is true. At 100k, the resistance is very close to that of a new set and the rubber is still flexible and soft. On the other hand, they are pretty cheap ~$40 for the set. Bosch Platinum plugs work OK in non-turbo Volvos. I usually get about 50k out of a set. Copper plugs (Denso, NGK, Bosch) are fine also. I would stay away from +2 or +4 plugs - waste of money.
Belts and hoses should be replaced if they show any cracking or wear.
If it is an automatic trans car, I would change the trans fluid ASAP. Let the car idle in park and let the trans pump the old fluid out through one of the trans cooler lines into a bucket. Add fluid as it gets pumped out. When the fluid coming out turns clean & red, you're done. Should take 10 or so quarts, so buy a case.
Good luck with the car - that is quite a find these days!

Mark,
Thanks for the suggestions. If you can believe it, I bought it with only 28,000 miles! I was amazed and still feel extremely lucky. Some of the first things I did were: replace timing belt and all accessory belts, change trans fluid and coolant, brakes. I later put a new water pump and hoses on. And IPD sway bars.
I always change the oil with Mann and Castrol.
I think I definitely need to replace the air filter, cap, rotor, plugs.
What about the rear differential seal?
Thanks

Patrick,
If you change the diff fluid, I think you have to replace the cover gasket since there isn't a drain plug on RWD Volvos. The gasket is a dealer only part.

Your 240 should get cap, rotor, & plugs every 30k. The wires should be every 50k, along with the timing belt. Do you know if it got this at 30k?
I would get the after market Magnecor wires, but get the plugs from Volvo, they're the only ones that seem to last 30k miles. The Bosch Platinums +4 are great for mileage at first, but won't last much more than 10k miles, and at $6 each, not worth it to me.
