760 Turbo with no power/bad gas milage 700 1989

I bought a 760 Turbo with 150,000 miles on it and it has been more of a project that I would have liked and now I need some advice. When the car is idleing, it occassionally studders but does not die like it did before I did an ignition tune up. The car still feels like its missing a lot of power. It will not glide up to redline like I imagined it would. I cannot decide if it is a transmission problem or an engine problem. I am getting about 13.5 miles to the gallon and the car seems to have trouble getting up to redline after 3000 rpms. I think that either the torque converter is not locking up, or the engine isn't making a lot of power.

I think it might be a transmission problem because of various other transmission problems I have. I tried to flush the transmission fluid to get it back to the red color is supposed to be but it will not get out of the light pink color. I don't know why that is. The transmission cooler was broken in radiator when I bought the car but I promptly changed out the radiator, flushed the cooling system and flushed the transmission about 6 times. When i start to drive the car in the morning, the car gets stuck in first gear until i have been driving for a couple of minutes.

I have put new plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, and fuel injectors into the car. I also cleaned out the intake manifold and throttle body.

Does anyone have any idea what my problem could be?

Could it be another totally unrelated problem, like the timing belt. It may have skipped a few cogs. That would explain the poor performance and gas mileage. If it was off enough it may even explain the lag in shifting? A good idea to replace it if you do not know how long it has been. Good Luck. Roger

I don't think this is the problem. But just so I can check, how do you line up the crankshaft sproket and the camshaft sproket withough having the head off?

This is a 4 cyl. right? With the top timing belt cover off, the mark on the cam gear lined up with the mark on the back of the top of the cover, the manual says the mark on the crankshaft pulley doesn't necessarily(?) line up with the 0 degree position on the timing mark on the lower cover. I believe it should be-at least in the vacinity. I should have checked mine when I put it back together, but was in a hurry and didn't. If indeed it doesn't, one must take off the crank pulley and the lower timing belt cover to inspect the location of the crank gear in relation to the mark on the block. It is at about the 11:30 position. The notch to line it up with is on the outside washer(shield) of the crank gear. These two marks must be in alignment for all the stars to be in their respective heavens.....Remember the crank turns twice for every one revolution of the cam gear.

Check the fuel pressure regulator and the engine coolant teperature sensor. These two items can cause terrible rich condition, which it seems you might have at 13.5 mpg. By the way, if it is running rich, you might consider replacing the plugs again when you get it running properly.

What shape are your turbo hoses in? How about the vacuum hoses? Cleaned the throtte body and IAC?

This car is not equiped with lock up torque converter. What do you mean when you say that you flushed the transmission about 6 times? Taking that statement literally would mean that you ran about 60 to 70 quarts of new fluid throgh it. I can't advise on the proper remedy for the leaking transmission cooler. Maybe one of the transmission experts will chime in with good advice.

My turbo air hoses are in good condition. They are all fairly new. Some of the vacuum hoses could probably use replacing. That is the next thing that I will get on top of.

I had to replace the one way valve between the intake manifold and the blow off valve with a universal one way valve from NAPA because I didn't know where to get it. Where is a good place to get this part from?

I did not clean the IAC valve, but I will do that next.

When I say I flushed the transmission, it means that I emptied the pan and then filled it back up. I did not get the full contents of the transmission fluid out each time I did a flush. I probably should just have a professional do it because transmission fluid is expensive.

Look in the FAQ section on transmissions. There are very clear instructions on how to flush it with only the purchase of five feet of 1/2" clear plastic hose and a case of ATF. It is very easy and takes less than an hour to do. I used about 10 quarts, but with the risk of coolant contamination, I would do an extra quart or two, and maybe come back and flush again after a tank of gas or so. Just a thought.

What type of transmission fluid are you using? It should only be expensive if you are using synthetic. I bought a case of 12 quarts and know I walked out of the auto parts store with change for a $20.00 bill. If you want to use synthetic, that's a great idea, but I would use the cheap stuff for the first flush and to make sure the transmission is still working before filling it with $50.00+ worth of fluid.

The one way check valve from napa is fine. Check out www.fcpgroton.com for pars purchases in the future. Good service, good prices and if something is wrong, they will make good on it.

Have read a bunch of complaints about "Scantech" parts on the bricboard, bushings in particular. My only Scantech experience is with flame trap kits and while they seem cheaply made, they worked fine.

Change the vacuum hoses, my 760 is running much better since I did a whosale replaement.

        Good luck,

        Dan
