Getting a car ready for an engine transplant... 200 1976

So, I've finally freed up enough time to start working on my none running '76 245 with a M-46.

There it is, in my back yard (where most of the work is probably going to be done.)

I have a "new" short block out of a '82 that is sitting in the back of the car, that I'll probably need to clean before I drop it in. How should I go about doing that? (There is no head, intake/exhaust manifold on the short block.) The short block sat in a garage for a while and collected quite a bit of dirt.

I'm going to need to transplant the head and manifolds from the blown '76 on to the good '82 engine. Is this a straight bolt on? The head on the '76 looks different from other B-21 heads I've seen.

I'm also going to need to use the distributor off of the '76 (since I did some serious damage to the dist. on the '82 engine). What's involved in this? My only worry is about swapping the Bosch ignition from the '76 into the '82 which had the white cap Chrysler ignition.

Is there a preferred method of emptying out the gas tank? The gas that is in there is probably about a year old.

Does someone have any pictures of where I should attach the hooks for yanking the engine out of the car?

Thanks as always. More questions to come I'm sure.

Yup thats a banana. They must cover/heat it in winter or replace annualy.

I doubt it is...

That said, I couldn't tell you one way or another. When it comes to plants, they all pretty much look the same to me. There are just too many kinds of plants around here to attempt to keep up.

I do believe '76 had the cam driven vacuum pump (smog device), hence the difference in the head. It should still be a straight bolt-on job, however.

The engine ... clean up as much crap off the top of the pistons with carb cleaner and a rag. After that, let some ATF soak up on the each of the pistons to get some lubrication to the rings before turning it over with a breaker bar. Repeat putting some ATF, then turn some more. If all the cylinder walls are pretty clean throughout, you should be alright. Have the oil seals (especially the rear!) and timing belt changed too while it is at its easiest. The oil within can always be changed later.

I'm not so worried about the dizzy - just swap the whole thing over.

As for the gas ... I don't recall if during this period if there's a drain plug on the bottom. If so, drain it and sell it to someone cheap.

"...and have you epoxied back the hood yet?"

Not quite yet, but that is on my list of things to do. (I do have the epoxy all ready to go...)

I'll take some before and after pictures.

Right now, I'm busy tearing down the dash to clean everything up as best I can. This car is going to look brand new on the inside once I'm done.

Tell us what happened that your engine blew.

You can and should get rid of the Chrysler ignition (unreliable) and put in the Bosch ignition. There's nothing special to do in terms of converting one to the other.

The head differences you notice have to do with the PCV/EGR systems. I've been buying spare B21F engines and noticed the differences between B21F model years. Fortunately, the valve cover houses most of the differences between B21F model years. The only other difference is the intake manifold-side engine sensors, which increase from 2 to 4 between 1980 and 1981 or 1982.

The EGR/Flame trap should be the only difference between model years for your circumstances. Just to be safe, why don't you post and/or e-mail me photos of your cylinder heads and engine block intake manifolds. I'm pretty sure that you would only need minor modifications of the cylinder head.

I'm also taking a cylinder head servicing class for the next 6 weeks, so if you have any problems, please let me know and I'll ask my instructor. I'm rebuilding 4 junkyard heads (2 B21Fs, a B23F, and B230F), whereas we're expected to rebuild one head in the class.

Please feel free to contact me directly at menaster@yahoo.com

Some better pictures: 200 1976

Just went out and took a few more detailed pictures of the head on the blown engine, and of the short block:

On the blown engine:

Here's a couple of pictures of the new short block (difficult to get a real good one with the angle it's at in the car):

Not the best pictures, but here's some of the blown engine in the car, and of the short block I'm going to drop in:

I'll go take some better pictures in a moment.

I'm not sure what caused the engine to blow. It happened before I bought the car.

I originally paid $200 for the car since it didn't run, but the body was in such good shape (no visible rust, even under the car) that I couldn't bare to turn it into a parts car. Aside from needing a new drivers seat (and a rather disgusting cigarette smell), the red interior is in great shape also. All the electrical stuff still works just fine (even the tailgate wires are good!)

I landed the good short block for free (thanks mostly to Kane). It's just been a matter of finding the time to clean up the new engine, and to do the swap.

Will the difference between the intake side sensors cause any trouble do you think?

Thanks for the reply.
