In my M47II I just went with Castrol ATF F. Here some prefer synthetic, Reline or Mobil for instance, a bit more pricey. You may want to do your power steering as well, it's the same fluid there too, it requires less than a quart.
    That's what I did.

    M-46s take ATF type F.

Some on the board have used synthetic oils with good success though. They can tell you more about that.

    Good luck!

I know you might not think this sounds right, but you're supposed to put AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID in most M46's. The side of the transmission will say "ATF-OIL" next to the filler plug if this is the case. Use "Type F" on those. The few that don't say this you put 80w90 gear oil.

If it is working well I'd stick to ATF. When you change it, take the sump pan off and clean the filters.
If it is beginning to slip, then you could think about alternatives as an alternative to an overhaul.
Mine started to slip some time ago, diagnosed as the pressure valve oil rings leaking - a common failing with age. As a stop gap I put in semi-synthetic gear oil, despite warnings that this might not be a good thing, and it miraculously cured the problem The overdrive has been snappier and more positive than it ever was. That was 50,000 miles ago. It is now on 305,000 miles.

I have another car (Triumph 2000) that has the same J-type Laycock overdrive, and the specified oil is a 80/90W gear oil.
