odometer gear - not 200

I've got a "new" 1988 240. I'm getting it together little by little. The speedometer works but not the odometer. I took it out and disassembled all the way down to the little white gear behind the speedo drive motor. Unfortunately that gear looks fine. Anyone know what else it could be. When removing the cluster from the dashboard there were 3 sets of wires that I had to detach. However, I did see two other wires behind the dash just hanging out. Could they have fallen off something? Thanks

You sure the gear is not slipping on the shaft? If the gear is sliping, then it's like trying to burn rubber on ice. As for the other wires, One is for the tach, all 240's were wired for it if they got it or not. The others I'm not sure.
