engine switch 1987 to 1990 240 200

Hello and thanks for all your previous help. Everything I know I've learned from Brickboard and my Bentley manual.

I'm retiring my problematic 1987 volvo that I pruchased from the goodwill for $75.00. The engiine seems like it is in good shape and I have a 90 wagon with a bad engiine. Does anyone know about the possible compatability problems with the switch?

I looked through the forums, and didn't find much, but I may not have used the right keywords....Any suggestions? Thanks so much for everything.

Keep in mind that in some places, it is actually illegal to put an engine in a car if the engine is older then the car.

    Good luck!

Be careful if you live in a place with emissions inspections. They may not like seeing an older engine in a newer car.

Sometime after '87, Volvo changed the "engine management" system on the 240s, adding a flywheel position sensor. It bolts to the rear of the engine block - just above the flywheel. That means that your '87 engine block, which didn't use this device, may not have the bolt holes you need to mount the sensor. The ignition/FI system in the '90 wagon won't work without the sensor. Maybe someone else out there can confirm whether the '87 block will accept the sensor mount.

Thanks so much for the info on the flywheel sensor possible incompatibility problem. That kind of info can really make a huge difference in this type of project.

I was planning to swap the engine-tranny combo as Bentley says that the two were meant to come out in one piece. I will put both in the 90, as the 90 OD isn't working anyway.

From your email, it would seem that the flywheel problem would not be an issue if I use this approach.

      Any thoughts?

You have to swap the flywheel unless you want to transfer the whole electrical system from the 87 to the 90. The fuel injection/ignition systems are not compatable between the years, so all you can really use from the 87 is the block (and the tranny if you want). You have to use all of the elecronics and sensors from your 90. So you need the flywheel(or driveplate on an auto) from your old 90 block.

Thanks for your input, Jessie- You helped me decide NOT to try the switch- They don't say anything about such things in the Bentley manual- Thanks to Brickboard, I was able to communicate with someone who has first hand experience- I will make a contribution in your honor.

Instead, I purchased a 1990 sedan with 80,000 miles (that had been a wreck) and will use the engine/tranny from that on my wagon. I was planning to attempt the switch with the engine/tranny in one piece (someone is helping me). Do you have any tips on this procedure? I know you have to take the hood and grille off, and then support the trans while you disconnect the engine from the engine mounts. Thanks again

The mount for the crank position sensor is actually on the tranny bellhousing, and many of the older trannys have a punchout for it anyway. You just need to use the flywheel from your 90 because it has the timing holes drilled in it. Other than that I don't think there should be too much problem doing that switch.

I ended up with an 88 engine/trans to put in my 1990. You said that there may be a punchout on my 88 trans for the sensor. If so what would it look like? there is a small "v" punched out on the top of the trans housing, but I don't see any place for bolts. thanks

Thanks for the info on the flywheel- I was thinking of swapping the engine-trans in one piece as my Bentley manual says that volvo designed them to come out together for servicing, and because I'm going to have to replace the rear main seal anyway Any thoughts? Thanks
