Thank you for the reply. I will respond to each part.
"According to the manual, you grease the seal and mount it "on" the tool, then tap it in. The manual doesn't actually say more.."
Correct -- but "mounting" the seal on the sharp edged tool is the problem. The edge is sharp enough to require a protective storage cap, and the outside diameter, where you mount the seal, is about 1.6mm bigger than the end of the crankshaft. So the seal is that much more difficult to place on the tool.
"If you damage the seal, maybe you're using un-original seal?
I just don't understand if the procedure should have "warning" on that problem, now that it doesn't??"
I use Volvo and Elring seals, but as an "amateur" mechanic, I don't replace them as often as a professional like yourself. A "warning" probably would not be needed for someone who has been shown how to use the tool. I believe it may just be a matter of practice. (And maybe more grease?)
"The manual says, "..if the axel is a little worn, the seal kan be pressed further 3 mm." - I haven't been there, but maybe it will mean something for you?"
Yes, the tool will only press the seal in even (or "flush") with the face of the seal carrier. So the manual is saying that putting the seal in as much as 3mm deeper is allowable, to avoid grooves from previous seal wear. That is "standard practice" with any seal, I believe.
BUT, that would require a different tool, and would expose the risk of positioning the seal crookedly, which is a different issue and not related to using the tool for seal installation.
I will be much more careful (and use more grease) the next time.
