... just got the owner's manual in the mail. pretty sure the seller said 87 octane was okay. the book indicates 89 min...
what do most folks here use in similar engines b230 w/turbo)? i live on long island new york and its pretty flat here. i also drive like the old fart i am.

    From the manual: "Volvo engines require unleaded gasoline with an (R+M)/2 octane rating (also called the Anti-Knock Index, or AKI) of 87 or higher....For improved performane, we recommend the use of premium unleaded gasoline (AKI of 91 or higher, RON of 95 or higher)".

    So, yes. Regular unleaded gasoline with an AKI of 87 is just fine.

    Flaps,
    I run premium in all my Turbo Bricks and mid grade (88 octane) in the N/A versions. Turbo's will run on lower octane but may suffer from possible engine damaging pre-ignition/detonation when the boost comes on. Like your owner's manual says, 89 octane or higher for Turbo's.
