I might as well throw in my 2 cents. I can only speak for cars imported to the US. M 40/41 was used with the B-18/20 engines thru 75. A few B-20's sqeaked through with M 45/46, but very rare. Beginning with the 76 240/260 models, the M 45/46 was used. No 240/260 built 76 and later has M40/41. M47 came along in 87.

I don't recognize the B21 "lt" designation, but I believe the first U.S. B21 FT turbos came in 1981, with the M-46 + OD.

      Hello,

2.1 Lt refers to the 2.1 litre engine aka. B21F(fuel injection) or B21A (carb). It came with an M41 gearbox provided you have a toggle switch to engage your overdrive.

The M46 with the pushbutton o/d & larger oil capacity didn't show up until 1981.

I'm used to an "L" for liter, and thought his "t" was for turbo.

The M45/46 were standard on all 240s covered by my 1975 240 Green Books, and I can vouch for that on two '76s and a '78.

          Okay here's the story...

          The M40 4 speed/M41 4spd+OD were stock standard from 75 to 80. I've owned 2 GT's (78 & 80) and 2 DL's (both 78) with the hard plastic gear shifter, toggle switch O/D, smaller oil capacity and shorter throws.

The M45 4 speed/M46 4 spd+OD hit the shores in 1981, and some late production Bertone's and 264's came with M46's. The newer boxes had larger oil capacity, slightly longer throws, crappy soft knobs that broke easily and a pushbutton O/D when applicable.

All 4 gearboxes are fundamentally the same. An M46 or M45 is easily and quite commonly transplanted into an older car as all the dimensions for length and bellhousing fitting were identical. I think you'll be surprised when you check your owners manual.

Realistically there's no real need to know what one you have, they're all bulletproof and just need to have their fluids changed and topped up to the fill hole every couple of years.

            No! 200 1979

            M46: 76 on.
The 41 and 46 are fundamentally the same, except for all the parts are different, except the overdrive unit, and even that's different on earlier M41s and later M46s.
            Dood, give it up!

From the responses you got, I'd say everybody knows except for rchink who must have had some non-typical (Canadian) experiences, and maybe the guy who speaks in tongues.
