loose interior door handle S90-V90

Yesterday the driver's inside door handle on my V90 sort of popped, and now it doesn't snap back to the closed position. It still works to open the door. My guess is that this is just a spring, but I want to get a sense of any impending doom as well as the cost and degree of difficulty to repair. I have never removed the door panel on this car, but there's a first time for everything. Thanks in advance.

The same thing happened to me. I went to the hardware store and bought a similar spring for a buck, fixed it so it would work and had money left over for a spare.

The sad thing is, the passenger handle broke and I had to replace the whole assembly for 57 bux.

Volvo only supplies the complete handle assembly for about $45.

I replaced mine for the same symptoms last summer. Indeed the spring had broken but finding a replacement would be difficult in my opinion.

I scanned the pages of the manual and can e-mail the .pdf fromat files to you if you'd like. It's not too big so I'll do it anyway.

Jim, thanks much for sending that PDF - looks like a bit of a bear. How long did it take you, and do you think there is a risk of the door becoming inoperative if I put off the job? Thanks

Mine is like that too. This is one of many areas that Volvo cheaped out in the specifications for these cars. Then they screwed their owners by not making the correct repair parts available. No, there is no danger of losing door functionality if you don't fix it.

I've got the same problem with my passager door, no need for fixing. It still works but looks kinda cheap. Better put the girls you want to impress on in the back so they don't notice the crappy quality! ;D

What a total bummer... chicks would so totally dig a Volvo station wagon if not for the floppy door handle :)

Seriously - thanks to all for the replies. I'm relieved that no failure is imminent. If anyone has an estimate of the time to remove and replace the door panel, I'd be grateful. I can do a 940 door panel in a snap. But that's another story.

The door panel itself is very similar to my old 740 in terms of difficulty. (Not bad if you have the book & know what you are doing. Otherwise you will break a bunch of stuff.)

The hard part of the door handle was getting the end of the new cable to seat at the lock lever. It is a barrel on the end of the pull wire similar to the ones on the throtle cable, but smaller. Visibility and access is very limited and it took me several tries to get the dam thing in place.

You will need a drill and proper size bit to drill out the pop rivets holding the handle in place. Then you'll need a pop rivet tool and new pop rivets to attach the new handle.

As I remember, the actual handle work was about 2 hours but I found several cracks in the panel and the foam block that is part of the SRS system had come unglued. So I mixed up some plastic compatible epoxy and glued all the cracked places and let it set overnight. Eliminated several mysterious rattles! If you are one of those unlucky people with wrinckled finsh on the panel, now is the time for that as well. (Mine is fine.)
