Help, I'm selling my brick! 200

I have a '90 240 wagon with about 206,000 on it. It's been an extremely reliable car (of course it has), but it's time to part with it. It has some issues that will need addressing by the new owner (like an air mass meter and a leaky transmission), but is in pretty good shape. With those things being wrong, should I try selling to a dealer or mechanic, or just the same as any other car? Any ideas? Any ballpark figures as to how much you would ask for it?

Thanks for the help,

sloan

    Sloan,
What shape is the body in ? (RUST ?)
With that mileage maybe a grand tops, having worked at a dealer before you wouldn't get more than $100 if that.

    Where are you located?

The body is in great shape. I'm located right outside of Boston. The car's made it to Seattle and back each of the last two winters. As it is now it's a bit sluggish when it's cold, but runs fine once it get's warm.

      Thanks for all the help,

I agree $1000 maybe as is. Anything that runs is worth $500 here in New England. You might get a little more if you fix the AMM and the leak. OTH - It might not be worthwhile. Do it only if you can get a return on your money.

If you're up for it, maybe a few DIY repairs make sense. Used AMM's can be had for as little as $50 and installed yourself. Where is the tranny leak? If it is leaking out of the pan, you might only need to tighten your tranny pan bolts, cost $0.

Don't even think about selling to a dealer; they'll rip you off for sure.

I'd try selling it on craigslist. I bought my car there, and the guy said he had lots of responses. Plus it's free. And of course, post your ad on here.

If that doesn't work after a few days near a weekend, try an ad in the paper.

Price depends a lot on where you live, but don't feel too down if you get less than $1000. I paid $1200 for my car, and it needed nothing and had 101K and a newish paint job (though I think I got a very good deal, and it would've gone for more out west).

    Good luck!

My experience is that a car with more than 200k miles is hard to sell for more than around $1500. There are exceptions, but most people simply don't want a car with that many miles. This is especially true when it is leaking oil and the "check engine" light is on, as it would be if the AMM is broken. In that condition, I think you would be lucky to get $1000 - assuming there is no rust, the A/C works, and the interior isn't torn up.

    just my $0.02
