I'd be sure to replace the alternator mount bushings. They're about 1.5" diameter, 1" thick, cost $1 or 2 each (I think you need 2).

When they wear, they let the alternator sit crooked on it's mounting bolt. The belts then sit crooked on the pulleys. A minor annoyance till they get noisy, or when it gets so bad that the belts twist and break.

May as well change them while you have the alternator off.

fcpgroton stocks them, if unavailable locally.

Why do you think it needs a "new" alternator?
The one on there might be as good or better than a junkyard one.
The junkyard one might be not working well either.

Take the one on it off, take it to an alternator shop and get it fixed.
It's usually just the brushes, occasionally the regulator, but the
alternator itself is probably fine. Save yourself some time money and
effort. Replacing an alternator without getting it serviced is like
replacing any other poorly understood piece of technology (car?, computer?)
without getting it serviced.

Yep,

You could try a new regulator in it, and then if that's not it, buy an alternator less a reg from an alternator shop.

Alternatively, a reman OE Bosch unit from Canadian Tire is only 200 plus tax after the core, and comes with a 5 year over the counter warranty. Guess what I am up to tomorrow with my 245???

Good idea on the wire cutters to save time.

But I wouldn't cut the Blue ground wire, good ones are scarce, IMO.

It fastens to the back end of the Alternator frame (8mm nut on thru-bolt, low down and inboard) and to a bolt on the Alternator mounting bracket on the block. The mounting bracket end is much easier to access with the Alternator off.

Yep, pretty straight forward. Take along a pair of wire cutters so you don't waste time trying to remove the nuts.
