The Alternator Saga continues... 1800

...when we last left our story our young, and rather hansome hero had just replaced the faulty replacement alternator in his beloved car with a new unit. The battery drain problem was no more, or so he thought...

...now we find our hero on his morning drive to school. On the way he noticed a small amount of smoke coming from under the hood. He pulled the car off the road and upon his investagation our hero forud the the new, replacement alternator was smoking. The sound of electrial sparks could be herd from the unit. once the battery was disconected, the sparking and smoking stopped.

Could this be a second faulty replacement alternator, or is this perhaps more of an indacator of a short somewere? What should our hero do? Only you can save him now!

If you are purchasing the alternators that fit GM cars (ac delco 66amp?) from your local chain auto parts store than yes, it is quite possible it was from the same batch that was built on a hangover morning in whatever third world country they rebuild them in. Been there suffered that.
If you have had two very pricey factory bosch or marchal alternators...I would be suspect and look at all of your wiring before you cook another one.
    good luck
    my two cents.

Might want to take it back to them and get it replaced. Should be under warranty. I used to swear by Napa quality, but recently they have been letting me down. I recently bought a brand new serpentine belt for my Mustang, and 10 miles down the street, it started to squeak. Got a replacement from them, same thing, 100 miles later, it would squeak in the morning. I finally got a Goodyear Gatorback from Autozone, been 2000 miles, no noise. The alternator on my Taurus (also from Napa) failed on me after about 20K miles (thank God for the lifetime warranty). I think it should go a bit longer than that considering the Bosch unit on my 74 144 failed at 253k miles in 1997, after 23 years! Probably the one you got was made on a Friday afternoon at 4.45pm.
