what is a flame trap? 900

I learned about flame traps last year trying to track down some oil loss. The good news is that the weakest point in the system was the gasket on the oil filler cap, and that's where the excess pressure and oil was escaping.

Which brings me to my recommendation - if you have a leak at the oil filler cap, do not just replace the gasket without cleaning/replacing the flame trap at the same time. Otherwise, the excess pressure will go find the next weakest point in the system, like the rear main seal.

If your flame trap is clogged the excessive oil pressure could cause engine seals to leak. Make sure it is cleaned out. There is a black breather box (plastic) mounted down low on the side of the block as part of the whole assembly. I replaced mine, it's only $30 at dealer.
