Rover runs like a dog! 200

My dear sweet 83 245DL has no power whatsoever. At first I thought this was because of it being an older Volvo, and a station wagon to boot. But, after driving my husband¡¦s 740 turbo and the 85 244DL (SMOKES the tires into second ¡V for sale, too!) we just picked up, poor Rover is really living up to her name. I¡¦m wondering¡K how can I make her spin the tires¡K even a little bit? I¡¦d even settle for merging onto the highway at something faster than 35mph.
I¡¦ve put in new cap/rotor and plugs, still need to get new wires for her. Have not replaced any wires in the engine bay, though I have re-wrapped the bare ones that I found. At first it seemed like a fuel issue, but after 5 bottles of STP injector cleaner and changing the fuel filter, she¡¦s still dog-slow. On the plus side, I get decent gas mileage, about 24mpg screaming down the highway at 75mph. Any suggestions, from regular tune-up hints to different cams would be helpful! I have no idea what the timing is set at, or what it should be set at for that matter.
Also¡K When I first start up the cold engine, often it will run for a bit, but when I put it in gear, the car shuts off. The next time I crank it, it fires right up and stays running. It has helped starting the car in neutral and getting the tranny fluid running before I go to pull out, but it will shut off on occasion.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! ļ Thanks!
Sarah and Rover ¡V The dog hauler

I would guess that poor old Rover has a bad intake manifold gasket, and needs a new one.

Hmmm maybe a clogged catalytic converter?? How old is the exhaust system?

I was thinking along those lines, too. I know the muffler and pipes look fairly new, didn't even check the cat. When it clogged on my Saturn the car would barely run and STANK of eggs. Rover does not smell and goes a bit better than the Saturn, but I'll be sure to check that out, among other things, I"m sure!

Have your timing checked also, sounds like it may be a bit retarded,if not advance it some. Also check your vacume lines, they get old a brittle will let air in and wreck havoc on performance. How are the plug wires and plugs, how old is the Distributor cap ,is it Bosh with a bosh rotor, they need to be.
Good Luck

You bring up an interesting subject to explore: the use of OEM or Dealer parts on the secondary ignition.

I thought if I went to the local auto parts store and bought the Bosch wire set for my car, it was the same as what i would get from the dealer. Not so! On my Turbo sedan, the "dealer" wire set not only looks different, but my mechanic showed me on his scope where it delivers a full additional 5KV to the plug.
