242 driver's door lock actuator 200 1983

So, why didn't you folks tell me to expect a lock motor in the driver's door?

After wasting time digging in the junkpile for an actuator, cutting some lengths of yellow and blue wire, I pull the door panel to find its already got one! Why? There's no key or button actuator on the passenger door.

Anyhow, this made for about the fastest installation of keyless on a 240 I've ever done. All five wires are in a plug-jack above the driver's left knee, and the fuse panel's a foot away.

    Art:
What luck! Maybe you got a drivers side door that was originally headed for a right hand drive car? Was the wiring harness there already as well?

It all looks factory to me, and yes, it was operational. Maybe I was used to the way the button feels in those 4 and 5 door cars I've already motorized or then I'd have noticed and wouldn't have bothered taking the panel off.

On closer examination, I think I know why it is there: the power window switch panel in the armrest would look so bare and plain with no rear window switches or the child lock-out switch, so they put a lock-unlock rocker in it. How lame would that be if it only worked one door.

I've guessed that the 242's had that switch for this reason:

in a 244/5, to unlock all doors you reach over your shoulder and pull/push the lock knob on the driver door.

on a 242, that lock knob is kinda far back to reach easily, hence the switch.

          Mystery solved!

Your guess sounds more sensible than my tongue-in-cheek reference to aesthetics. Especially now that I'm old enough to enjoy joint aches and pains.

          Thanks, Evan.
