need help-960 engine swap 900 1992

Hey ya'll- hoping you can help me finish up this cursed engine swap. Put a 95 engine in a 92 960. Guess I need to swap out the motronic computer too since everthing else is now 95 spec, but I can't find it! Is it on the drivers' side? Help! I only have the less-than-helpful Chilton book. Thnks for any help you can give me.

Ned Chilton

Spook may be on to something about the grounds. The power stages are grounded near the driver side engine mount bracket, the ground tang is secured by one of the bolts that hold down the plastic cable protector that travels across the top of that bracket. I missed that ground when I did the head gasket on mine, it was making intermittant contact while hanging free. The MAF is grounded at the top of the engine with the wires that ground the injectors. Sounds to me like it is either a bad ground or a loose connection. You had to change the big plug at the shock tower for the swap, maybe a wire got crossed or a connection blade got pushed out. Looks like you will have to get the ohm/voltmeter out and spend some hours checking every connection and length of wire. Good luck, let us know how it pans out.

Thanks all. I did indeed find it on the drivers side near the hood release as you said. Swapped it out and it still runs like crap. Looks like at least one plug is not firing at all. Have swapped out plugs, coils- no change. I'm frustrated with this two-week engine swap. Maybe I'll forget about it for a while and attack it again when i'm fresh. Anybody got any ideas? I get a random 1-2-1 code saying the amm or wiring to it is faulty. I've swapped in the other amm from the 92 with no change. Surely they aren't both bad? Anyway, thanks for the help.

      Dear nedc,

May this find you well. I've never swapped engines: that's way above my pay grade. I salute you for undertaking this.

While 2 AMMs could be bad, it seems more likely that there's a faulty ground. I don't have any 960 wiring diagrams, so can't point you in a specific direction, in terms of where to find the ground(s). Some of the on-board experts should be able to do so.

At the risk of driving your blood pressure up into four digits, check all grounds - clean and treat them with aerosol de-oxidizer. You seem to have done everything else, that's reasonable to do.

Wishing you every success, I remain,

      Yours faithfully,

      spook

It's located on the driver's side behind the side kick-panel (the one that has the hood release in it). You will need to remove the side panel as well as the top kick panel. It's well marked once you get to it. The computer on the passenger side is in fact for the ABS.

I think you will need that updated ECU, 95 was the first year with the lower hp and higher torque at low speeds. Fairly sure the cams changed in 95. There are other differences too, the fuel pumps, the relays just to mention a few. If I was at home I could look at the two wiring diagrams for more differences.

The ECU is located behind the passenger side kick plate in front of the door. There is a plastic cover you have to remove.
Volvo used Motronic 1.8 ECU from 92 - 95 so you should not have to change the computer. They switched to MOtronic 4.4 in 96.
    Good luck

      Justin,

I looked there and found a box but it's not like the one that came with the engine . I think it is the ABS ecu. According to some diagrams I have the Motronic ecu should be on the drivers side. At any rate it is different from the ecu that came with the 95 engine. The reason I think I need to swap out the computer is that the car runs like crap right now- very lean with no power. It could be something else (fuel filter, O2 sensor) but I want to make sure it's not the computer. Thanks

      Ned
