245 Turbo Wagon - 1983 and fuel injector problems? To buy or not? 200

My wife has fallen in love with a 1983 245T and wants to buy it. 250,000 km, watercooled turbo, new wiring harness, new shocks, new rubber, and *no rust*! My Volvo guru says to stay away because this model is prone to (costly) fuel injector problems. (Of course, he has a 1988 240 for me to buy)

Any comments or advice?

Thanks in advance...Roger

The 83 245T body is perfect - the 88 is probably as well (its one of his current service loaners). Can't buy both. Besides i'm approaching 350k kms on my 85 745T and will *never* sell it (there are only 454 or so older ones out there). I just cannot picture 3 bricks in the driveway with a combined age older than me!

K-system injectors are just spray nozzles, no electrics. What's the problem? Are you sure he didn't mean injection system problems? I'd be much more concerned about regular oil changes. If it starts, idles, and drives well, there's no fuel system problem and, as others have said, it's reliable so it's likely to stay healthy.

Buy the 245T...Your Volvo guru is not a guru, mechanical injectors are reliable, the b21ft is a great engine.

hi there, k-jet fuel injectors are forty bucks each. but sounds like a fish tale from your mechanic to me. k-jet is a great system but not a bunch of people know alot about them. some here have mucho experience with k-jet, not me but im learning. some say the best f.i. system built. i could stuff another turbo in my yard if you dont want it just email me. good luck

K-jet (CIS)? What fuel injector problems? All i know is if mine get even the slightest bit funky i dump in a bottle of Techron FI cleaner and BAM good as new. These use the mechanical 'door' type air metering, pretty damn reliable if you ask me. If you want that car you better pray i don't find out where it is.

    Buy the turbo car.

First, as many BBers will testify, it's quite unusual for a wife to be interested in adding a Brick to the family! Take advantage of your wife's attraction to this car.

Second, it sounds like the car is in great condition. Rust is the big issue, as well as regular maintenance and responsible driving of these cars (supposed to let cool down after driving a lot, etc.). It sounds like this car is pretty well-cared-for.

Third, I've never heard of turbos having fuel injector problems. I don't follow the turbo stuff regularly, but I think I would have seen posts addressing this issue at some point. I haven't. I think your mechanic just wants you to buy his car instead of the turbo.

Fourth, it's a turbo. The 1988 240 isn't. As much as I love it, I'd drop my car for a decent-condition turbo in a second. Heck, try out driving both. See which one you prefer. I bet you'll go for the 245T.

He is making that up out of thin air. Although the '88 is a great year, the T with K-jet is very robust. You probably ought to buy both.

i drove my 84 240 turbo from 102,000 to 190,000 miles and never had an injector problem

the only issues relating to fuel i ever noted in the turbo models is that they are a little harder to start

the turbos have a different fuel path and Air Mass Meter than the non-turbo models
