shift lock problems 200 1992

A recent shift lock problem has risen.

Only in the morning when I crank up my 1992 183000 automatic -- the shift lock will not let me shift out of park. I step on the brak and do not hear the usual click noise....after 3-4 minutes of me depressing the brake pedal it eventually clicks on and releases the shifter.

I have checked the fuses - they all look good and the overdirve works good. Is it the solenoid? or a bad connection in the shifter? I hav enot been able to find the place where you can unlock the shifter?

Any advice/ ideas? Will this eventually just stop working all together?

Thanks for all the help - dpdy

Because it is intermittent, the problem is likely to be a very fine electrical break, like that of a cracked fuse, solder joint or corrosion. The shift lock should have basic power if, (1) the brake lights do indeed light and (2) the AC snowflake lights when turned on. Try to check those two things next time it happens.

      Art,

How is the AC light tied into this system?

      Thanks!

In the '92, the shift lock relay coil is supplied by ignition-on power from fuse #12. The AC switch's light is also supplied by fuse 12. The presence of both lights eliminates a lot of potential fuse holder corrosion from the list of suspects.

My experience with the shift lock quitting was the brake light fuse. It didn't blow, nor was it corroded; it was cracked in the middle where it fatigued after flexing each time the brakes were applied. When my daughter called from the school parking lot with "I can't get it out of park", I looked at the diagrams to see how to best troubleshoot when I got there. The manual release lever was long gone when we got the car.

          Hi Art -

Thank you for your response. I changed fuse #12 this am just to be safe. Did not seem to make a difference.

I have had the car for a year and the snowflake light has never worked (ac does just not light). I did have problems with the brake reverse lights....they only seemed to work if you pushed the shifter to the right as you were reversing...maybe this is all connected?

Do you think it is a loose connection in the shifter housing?

Thanks for your info - much appreciated.

Yes, indeed, something could be loose in the shifter housing. Lots of things get loose in there, in my opinion.

The neutral start portion of the gearshift switch is necessary for the shift lock. But-- the car would not crank if that part were failing.

The reverse lights portion is not involved.

But the brake lights are definitely involved. The power to retract that lock solenoid comes directly from the brake pedal switch; does not pass through the bulb-out sensor. But if that power is there (i.e. the brake lights are coming on), the shift lock relay has to pass it to the solenoid. The shift lock relay must get its ground through the starter solenoid via the neutral start switch, and its power from fuse 12.

The suggestion to check those lights is helpful in most cases as a shortcut to actually tracing the juice with a test lamp. Could be your snowflake is just burned out, I suppose, but I'd start by testing at the fuse panel. Then maybe you can see what's going on under the shifter cover...

BTW, here's how I dealt with the failing reverse light switch: Cheap fix for the backup light switch on automatic

          Thanks Art!

I have had shift lock problems with my '93 245, and I am still not 100% sure that I have sorted it all out as there sometimes seems to be a gremlin lurking about...

Check your brake light switch and then the bulb failure relay...the big round red one under the dash behind the instrument cluster.

    Good Luck!
