Questions on alternators 120-130

My 64 wagon was converted to an alternator by some unknown miscreant and the wiring is kinda cobbled up.

In short, I replaced the Delco two wire unit with a one wire model and I have some wires to decipher.

The big black wire that runs over to the starter connects to the remaining terminal on the alternator, right.

The Idiot light wire (small red one) goes to terminal 2 of the alternator?

The remaining small black wire goes where?

The harness these wires are in, looks original.

The regulator is long since MIA.

Thanks

Questions on alternators 120-130

When faced with Delco wiring I always remember; the big wire goes to the stud/terminal, then a jumper wire from there to the spade terminal *furthest* from that stud. Amp light wire goes to the other spade terminal.
Hold up three fingers while you say "it's a one wire alternator" ;o)

So you realy dont have a one wire its a one wire plus one! The big black wire goes to the BAT bolt on the rear and the idiot light terminal is the number 1 plug on the edge. the rest hang

But remember, the AMP idiot light remain out of service...made a periodical (every month or so) check with a voltimeter on the battery as a safety measure.

Questions on alternators 120-130

Sorry, I misread the previously messages. Yes, the second wire is for the idiot light. The jumped wire (see previous message) is for energize the secondary field (without it the alternator will be provide energy only after 1200 to 1500 rpm).

J.

That's the link I was looking for on your site Ron!!!!! I knew it was there, just got lost. I am downloading your site to my laptop so I can use it off line when I am working on my car.

Your Beer idea is good! A nice brown Ale was good last night while sitting on the tailgate after fixing my light problems. Is it motivation?? I'll do the Alternator wiring tonight (think Guinness Draft) Maybe the gas guage tomorrow (Anchor Steam). Friday is under study (Sierra Nevada of some flavor).

thanks

Mike

Mike;

Which particular beer idea?...I have more than one hehehe...

Good Luck...I take that back, when it comes to 'lectrical things, luck is not the thing to rely on, better yet...work carefully and double check everything, and I wish you:

...much success!

PS. I'd hook it up so that the AMP light was still functional!...unless of course you use it to indicate that your 1000W ground-pounder stereo amp is ON...

A POST maintenance beer only!

I like the AMP light... simple, direct and to the point.

Thanks Ron
