Adjust the Cable at the Release Under the Dash 700

I suggest you simply adjust the release lever under the dash. Had the exact same problem as you when I got my 760 last month. I adjusted the cable so it would pull more, now it works great.

Once open I noticed that the driver side latch on the cable appeared to have slightly slipped off from the cable, which is understandable after 17 years. Eventually I'm sure it will have to be replaced, but it seems to be holding great so far, and I'm under the hood almost daily, learning about my new aquisition.

Hope this helps!

I would adjust it. I just replaced a hood cable in a 88 740 wagon last week, and until then I had no idea there was an adjuster. :)
The one latch pulls against the other, so probably the cable is just stretched a little. IF one unlatches, it must still be attached. Get a flashlight, get under the dash, and see if you can adjust the little plastic threaded sleeve.

Good luck!

Try having someone pull and hold the release in the car while you are pushing down on the hood above the sticking latch.

The cable is not releasing the second latch. Try tightening it using the adjuster nut just in front of the hood release lever in the cabin. If this does not work, then it has slipped off the second latch pull and you'll have to release it from below. See the FAQ.

Hood Won't Open 700

i have been told that destructive entry through the light is the cure....but on a subtler thought if you can get it up THAT far can you remove the two clips holdign the grill and get the grill off, if so some aerosol lube sprayed i nte hgeneral direction of the hood sping damper might do it...

I like that...."destructive entry"! If you don't wat to use the big hammer approach,
1. Grab a long screw driver (1/4 or 5/16 X 12" are my weapons of choice)
2. Grab a flashlight
3. Raise the front of the car and can climb under
4. Using the flashlight, locate your sticky release from underneath. Finding it the first time from below may take a while. Everything looks different from this perspective.
5. Position the blade of your screwdriver between the point where the release spring is attached and the fixed piece of metal sticking up. Now give it a twist. If you had the magic spot, you will hear the familiar "pop" of the hood.

If it sounds like I have done this a few times, yes I have. If I had bothered to read any of the numerous posts about adjusting the tension of the release cable, this exercise would have been completely unnecessary. However, if my cable ever brakes....I'm ready.
