You can buy nice chrome "acorn" nuts for the valve cover, size M6, for just a couple of bucks. The valve cover itself looks real nice with the "VOLVO" polished and sprayed with clear coat.
Just a good power-washing of the engine will do wonders- they look pretty striking when clean, with a bright red block and shiny aluminum head. I do know a guy who painted his block purple too- that was pretty cool!
Bring along paper towels if you do that- the distributor cap is unhappy when it gets wet.
Other stuff- you can get custom colored silicone ignition wires in red, yellow, blue, etc. Some guys cut a hole using a 4" hole saw in the timing cover, so you can see the cam pulley. Polish the hardware and paint the pulley, for a complete effect. MAinly just a clean engine compartment is key to looking good.
You can also paint the exhaust manifold for a more finished look- try www.eastwoodco.com for some good paint and detailing products. They WILL give you ideas of stuff to do to your car!
