idle speed 200 1981

I have a 81 242 turbo that idles fine on start up, but after driving it and coming to a stop the rpm will drop almost to a stall then the rpms jump well above idle. It may do this several times till it finally settles down or it may only take once but it seems to evetually settle and idle correctly.

Any ideas on a fix?

I was goign to go thru the idle setting procedure in the bently book since it uses a CIS (constant idle stabilization) like the 83 but after investigation I found it does not have a wire to disable the system like the book says the 83 and later cars do.

any help would be much appreciated

Jeff

    idle speed 200 1981

Hey there I have a 1983 244 Turbo that I was having problems with. Every time I would push in the clutch to come to a stop, the engine would almost die, then catch and idle fine. After cleaning the idle air motor ( I thought that it may have been from a stickign valve, so clean this if you haven't lately ) I readjusted my base idle. When I grounded the connector or plugged the hoses, the car died. I finally figured out that the throttle plate completely closed at idle. So I adjusted it out to the point that it wouldn't stumble on return to idle anymore. This fixed the problem, but unfortuneatly now it idles at 1200 rpms, and any lower it will drop before catching idle. Haven't had time to look into it more. Try this and let us know,

    Smith

    Jeff,

    Per HaynesPage 4a-32:

If the vehicle is not equipped with the blue/white test connector, plug the hoses from control valve to prevent air from entering the valve, this will eliminate the Constant Idle Speed system to allow base idle setting.

    Hope that helps.

    Mario
