Auto trans solenoid modification 200

I just bought a 1988 245 w/180k miles this weekend. Trans is smooth shifting but no fourth. Checked all the usual suspects: fuse, solenoid relay, hot wire and finally I pulled the solenoid tonight. It was toast. As per the post by Roger Scott (Jan 16 '04), I made a channel between the two fluid holes (I used a milling machine instead of a dremel tool and went with the single outer O-ring). No leaks and 4th gear has been restored! Thanks Roger. Great post!

I modified mine several months ago after reading Roger's article. It is hard to believe how well the tranny works as a full time 4 speed! I even towed another 240 on a dolly for 10 hours through the mountains with no problems. The only draw back is the alienation of all of the Volvo worshippers on this site. (I asked a lady from Sweden why there were so many strangely engineered parts on these cars. She said it had something to do with 6 months of darkness every year...)

I did the modification as a necessity. I had purchased a one way plane ticket to my parents home in order to drive them (in their '86 240) 8 hours back to my house. Of course with the current security measures at the airports, I dared not pack any tools on the flight to their house. When they picked me up at the airport, I noticed that the car wasn't shifting into 4th gear. I remembered about the solenoid modification and did it. Before I did it, I checked around their city for the replacement part and couldn't find one. After I did the modification, the tranny shifted perfectly. Now they don't ever have to worry about that silly OD relay and solenoid.

Although I don't personally plan to use a selectable OD in any of mine, I am wiring up a relatively inexpensive, heavy duty Idec relay on a 244 that I am refurbishing for sale. If it works like I have drawn it, I'll post the schematics and part numbers.
