WHAT SWAY BAR UPGRADES WILL FIT MY 240? 200 1986

I have a stock '86 240DL sedan I want to make roll less, so I am considering installing the larger diameter front and rear sway bars. I've heard that sway bars from the "GT" sedans will fit my car, but have not come across any of them. Are there applications from other models/years that would work as well. The boneyard I deal with gets alot of 240 wagons, and alot of 7 and 9 series cars and wagons also. I put the rear springs from a 240 wagon last year and that made all the difference in the rear ride height.

Thanks for your help.......

      Fitz,

You seem to have researched this quite well from reading your prevous posts. I want to get your opinion on NA sedan setup with only a Turbo front bar (23mm) and stock sedan rear bar (19mm). Will it be better to change both front and rear bars to the turbo sedan bars (23mm, 21mm).

      Thanks,

      Dan

Dan, thanks, I did put a lot of time into researching the upgrades on my car before I performed them. (measure twice, cut once, save $$$) Regarding your sedan, I'd go with the 23/21 setup. If you use a stiffer front bar and leave the rear suspension untouched, you may notice the car trying to 'twist' a bit as the back end tries to roll more than the front. It's a weird feeling and it will probably encourage you to upgrade to a stiffer rear bar. -but if all you have now is a 23 front bar, put it on and wait for a rear bar to come to a scrap yard near you. If you're planning on using wagon springs or IPD sport / overload springs, I'd keep the original rear 19mm bar and re-evaluate after a test drive. If you use progressive rate springs, I would think you'd want the stiffer 21mm (turbo) bar since the heavier spring rate doesn't kick in until part way through the spring travel.

I'm planning on putting a set of TRW progressive rate springs on the back of my wagon in the next few months. My local Napa can order them for $65-pair. The original rear springs are starting to show their age since the car was previously owned by a growing family of 6 for about 13 years, and heavy loads were routinely carried.

        God bless,
        Fitz Fitzgerald.

Thanks for the feedback. I am trying to decide if I should install the turbo bar on my son's 240 or save it - I have my eyes open for a good 240 project.

The bargain bars are the ones off a turbo sedan 23mm 21 mm (not wagon), same as an '80 GT. The '79 GT has a nice big 23 mm rear bar, moderate 21 mm front and fine front R-sport springs. IPD bars are the deluxe route if you have the means.

www.car-parts.com is a search engine for boneyards across the US. You could probably find some turbo bars here and have them shipped. I would replace the bushings with poly, obviously the right size for the bars you get. I think Dave Shannon might have some...are you out there Dave?

    Good Luck

Yep, in an effort to avoid blatent self promotion I was not going to address this but since you mentioned it I do have a set of 25/22 (just in Friday) and 25/25 bars, the only problem is I don't have any boxes big enough to ship them right now, and boxes that size are hard to find.

The cheapest way to go with 75% of the performance increase is to find a turbo sedan in a yard.
      Cheers
