Oil 120-130

Hi.
Tne B18 engine of my 121 was rebuilt one year ago. On the factory they put SAE 30-50W oil. I feel the engine have a bit more resistance at start (and the oil pressure gauge- I rigged one - take 5-10 minutes to goes under 80 psi).
I live on a medium to hot temperature enviromente (between 15 C and 35 C - 59 F to 95 F), very humid (80 to 100% relative humidity ). ¿How good is SAE 20-40W on comparision with 30-50W on my enviroment?. ¿and SAE 40? Just on few weeks i will change oil and want to use the more adequate to the old lady.
Thanks in advance for your kindly answers.

    Oil 120-130

They used to recommend 20 in the winter and 30 in the summer. Then about
50 years ago they introduced multigrade oils so that you didn't have to
change between winter and summer. Unless your engine is pretty worn, my
guess is that 10W-40 should be more than sufficient and heavier oil would
only reduce the flow of lubricant to places that need it WHEN YOU START,
not 5-10 minutes later. Remember that unless it is extremely hot (110° F,
for example) your oil is expected to run about 75-100°F hotter than the water.
It is made to do that. The people who design the viscosity-leveling
additive packages and feedstocks know all about this and they work very
hard to make oils that are good all year and in just about all temps.

Now if your engine is running at 180°, then your oil is running at 255-280°
under long-term operation. How much difference does it make if the outside
temp is 80° or 100°? Not much in my book? The hot oil sees it as much cooler
and the exposure to the airstream cools the pan, which in turn cools the oil.

I lived in a similar climate for many years (maybe even hotter in summer), and 20W-50 always did a good job for me. Now I'm where it's cooler than that, and I like 10W-30.

Live in beautiful Pacific NW, always use Castrol GTX 20W-50 in summer, 10W-30 in winter

        Damien,

First time I've seen your profile-picture.. Is THAT a dream-photo or what!
Wauu, I really like that photo!
Actually I collect pictures of the Amazon in "different" places (than just on the ordinary road) - could I have your permission to save a copy of that picture? (please, please!)

        /Soren

          you made my day! 120-130

Thanks so much for the compliment Soren, really appreciate it! Shot was taken a few years back in Sedona, Arizona during a camping trip; waited hours for the perfect light. Car is currently nearing the end of as 2 year complete restoration, can't wait to get it back on the road! I'll send you a higher quality digital image shortly. Regards, Damian

I'd also like to throw in a question for my climate as well while we're on the subject...

I live in the rainy northwest. Temperatures here are best described as temperate. We don't experience very cold, cold winters and snow very much at all. During the summer it gets hot, but it's not unbearable and the height of it only last for maybe a month during the summer in the 90's.

I've been using just plain 30W. Do y'all think this is OK? What was the original recommended oil weight from Volvo?

    - V

Hi, this table coming from the 1967 owners manual for 121/122 model. By now, our engine are a bit overused, and usually need a bit more dense oil than new. Hope it helps.

      Joaquin
