Parking brake repair questions 200 1992

Hello All:

I have a '92 245 with a parking brake system in dire need of repair. This is the late parking brake system without the star adjuster mechanisms. I noticed squealing from the rear wheels on take-off and every application of the brakes was resulting in an "oil-can" kind of hollow clunk emanating from the rear of the car.

On the weekend I jacked the car up and found that the rear passenger wheel would not turn. The driver's side rear was dragging slightly. I removed the center console and backed the adjusters off completely.

I had difficulty removing the rotor on the passenger side rear. The e-brake shoes were delaminated and stuck to the rotor. While I was working the rotor free of the shoes one of the spring steel retainers that keeps the rear shoes in place broke. Are these included in the hardware kits from places like FCPgroton.com?

Does anyone have good instructions for removing and replacing the emergency brake hardware? I have a Chiltons, which is practically useless... What do you use to remove and replace the springs? Some clear pictures would be fantastic for this stuff-- I checked the 700/900FAQ, but the info there is sparse...

Finally, I have suspected for some time that the 17mm adjuster bolt in the center console wasn't working correctly-- when I took the console apart I found that the c-clip on the end of that bolt was missing and that there appears to be another piece of hardware stuck inside the mechanism-- probably a nut of some description, similarly cadmium plated like the 17mm adjuster bolt. Does anyone have an exploded diagram of the internals of the brake handle mechanism, or am I stuck getting one from a boneyard? Particularly, what is the order of the pieces-- working from the back of the console forward, is it the 17mm bolt, then the nut, then the steel tab with the hole in the center that is part of the handle mechanism, then the c-clip?

Sorry for the wordy post, but I'd appreciate any help I can get!

Parking brake repair questions 200 1992

Hi Herb,

Actually I did mine on my 89 a couple months ago. New shoes and rotors from groton. My springs were not really rusty so I reused them. One thing though, I bought new shoes retainer clips from the dealer. These are the right angle clips that keep the shoes firmly against the backing. If these are weak they can either snap, or cannot keep the shoes well aligned sop they drag against the rotors. Definately worth the 2.50 cents dealer price each, need two per side.

The job was relatively easy, once all the old crap was off. Make sure everything is back in place right. Also you will need a full can of brake cleaner to clean everything up. Of course new rear pads with the new rotors...
Shims and brake silicone.

Enjoy,
Greg

Parking brake repair questions 200 1992

Hello from south of the border.

I struggled with my e-brakes too a while back. My shoes had come apart on one side too. Seens the loose piece of braking material managed to wedge iteself in somewhere so one back wheel locked. Fortunately that happened in front of my own house. Took me hours to get the other rotor off.

I can't help you with the part up front because mine is fine, but for the brakes themselves I found that the easiest way for me to get the spring in and out was using a big screw flat driver and pliers. The screw driver inserted into the coils of the sprint and levered toward one end to take the tension off the hook at that end. Then pliers to actually pull the hook out. Reverse that to put them in. I bought two different tools for drum brake springs and wound up taking them both back. May have been my ignorance with those tools, but I found the makeshift way worked much better.

As far as I know there is no kit that goes with the shoes. I think the dealer told me that they just got a few bucks each for the springs, but since they wanted $70 for the shoes, I didn't go there. I bought the shoes from FCP Groton. While I was waiting for them to arrive, I went to a pick-n-pull for something else and saw practically new rear rotors on a car, took them off because they were better than mine and found practically new e-brake shoes too. Took those and the springs and other hardware too. I used those shoes since I wasn't sure I would keep the car.

I hope the screwdriver and pliers tip helps If you are interested in the new shoes I still have write me at corbomight@excite.com. I will throw in the springs I kept for spares.
