I have to find a compressor at the yard....best way to know one is good??? 700 1987

the bearings on my 1987 760T's AC compressor are squealing, warbling, sounding like it needs replaced...

2 questions:

1. I think I have KiKi Diesel compressor... how do I know for sure so I get the right one from the yard?

2. is there anyway to know the compressor is good while it's sitting in a junker in the yard? OR is the only way to know for sure that I get a good compressor to buy a new one for $300?

3. Do I most likely have a leak somewhere that caused this condition in my current compressor?

thanks,

jack

You do not need a DK. Any RWD Volvo is a candidate donor. Look for a recent shiny one, pressure is a good sign. Sealed with hoses in place is a must. The yellow.black labeled Tama (other names used) are good.

That is my method - find one that still has freon in the system, indicating that the seals are ok. Also all hoses still connected and a belt on it if possible. Rotate the clutch pulley and the shaft to make sure there is no binding. Make sure the clutch coil works - you can check on the yard's 12V battery. Remove the compressor and turn it upside down to see if any oil drains out. Condition is directly proportional to the amount of oil in the unit.

does it matter that I am replacing a compressor in a vehicle that has been converted to R134a refrigerant...?

can I still use any RWD Volvo compressor?

      thanks,

My understanding is the receiver/dryer and compressor oil need to be changed, but no other internal changes are required. If you're replacing a used compressor you should replace the oil anyway, so you should be able to use any compressor.

Please correct me if I am wrong as I may do this myself when the weather gets hot again.

Yes, you would want to swap oil for the refrigerant you will use, ester for 134a. Other than that, only Sanden requires a seal change for 134 in the compressor, others are OK. It is still a risk, but I have had great luck carefully picking used compressors for $20.
