Crappy cold start idling 700

This morning, started car, it idled terrible. It's about 38 degrees outside temperature. Had to hold my foot on the accelerator to get the tach up to 1000 or so for it to idle strong enough for the engine to run and warm up. After about 2 minutes of forcing fast idle, it idled (crappily) enough for the engine to stay running and get about 1/4 across the temperature gauge. Okay, so I take off and I late and doing 40mph and start to give it gas as I get on the interstate and the engine hesitates briefly, and I think I hear a "click" coming from the area of my relay box below my radio. I turn the radio off so I can hear better, and, sure enough, the next time I give it some gas it hesitates again slightly and I hear the "click" again. It's definitely coming from the area of my relay box. I've never heard the fuel pump relay click while driving (although I do usually drive with my radio on) other than the times when I was familiarizing myself with the sound of it with an earlier (now solved) problem but the engine was not on at that time. Are these indications of a faulty fuel pump relay, or could it be a problem with the fuel pump itself? I sure would like to resolve this.

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that if the FI relay was bad, the car wouldn't start at all.

Can you isolate exactly which relay is "clicking"... yank the fuse panel cover, and put your finger on top of the FI relay and mash the gas pedal to see if you get your click...

I am under the assumption that the FI relay is supposed to be on all the time while running, so if you do get a click from the FI relay, it's a cheap $25 to fix.

Have you checked your engine temperature sensor?

Do you have an automatic climate control or anything in your vehicle? I would imagine that if it were trying to heat, you may get a heater relay or something engaging... dunno.

    Mke
