Exhaust Smell w/ check engine light on/ also transmission rough 200 1990

Is it save to assume that I need a Cat and O2 sensor because of the smell. I notice it when idling. My Volvo has 190000 miles. Also when the AT shifts into 1st it shifts rought unless I really step on it- I notice it mostly in traffic. I bought a transmission filter kit- will this solve this problem- Thanks in advance for your help.

If you have a "Check Engine" light on you need to look at that before you waste any time with a transmission filter kit in hopes that will somehow cure all your problems. Read the codes from the ECU and post what you get.

The 02 sensor and "bad cat" may just be symptoms of the problem, not the cause, although at the mileage and age you mentioned they certainly are on the suspect list - as are many other components.
