Sqeaking front pads - HELP ! 700 1994

My wife looks at me with those big brown eyes and says ..."Honey Bun - oh master mechanic - my brakes are squeaking - so out the tools come (gotta keep her happy).

Anyway - the pads are relatively new - don't recall the brand (Bendix - I think). They have these stick on anti-squek pads. I used a bit of grease on the outer surfaces, then took that off as it did not help. They still squeal - LOUDLY!

The only thing I can think of is the pivot springs at the top of each pad - some of them are really stiff - somewhat hard to move back and forth. That and I may have to do a better job of getting all the brake dust out.

Am I on the right track? Please help me get this fixed.

    Sqeaking front pads - HELP ! 700 1994

Changing the springs never did much for me. The anti-squeal compound, applied correctly to the backside of each pad, can do some good.

Another shade-tree trick is to take a flat blade screwdriver and using considerable pressure, nick a line in the rotor from the center straight towards the outer edge. Do this about three times, equally spaced around the rotor, inside and out. The break in the smooth surface will remove the glaze from the pads allowing them to re-seat and hopefully stop the squeak. I did this once and it worked reasonably well. It's certainly a cheap fix.

Generaly speaking, (Ford Man) the use of a compound available at your local auto store will do a great job & should solve your issue.

That is what I did to start - although it was just some grease. I applied it to the outside of the stick on shims. Then I thought that because there was these special stick on shims - the lube was not needed - cleaned it off.

Is the brake lube not just a grease?
