Horn Quit... Any thoughts 900

The horn on my fiend's '93 945 quit working. It worked up to this point, and sat for about 2 weeks -- now there's no power to the horns (at the front of the car). The fuse is fine, and I don't hear a relay when I press on the buttons.

Is there a relay for the horn?

Is there someplace in particular I should begin looking?

Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for your feedback, guys.

I'll use your suggestions to try to track it down. I'll let you know what I find.

    Thanks again.

    Horn Quit... Any thoughts 900

Was there any recent work done on the car? Interior? Engine compartment?

I'll relay the recent experience with my '89 765T, different beast I realize but it may help. My horn problems started after I had the dash apart for some bulb changes, pulled off the top and bottom cover of the steering column since I was trying to diagnose an SRS fault as well. When I put it all together the steering column covers weren't aligning properly because some of the wires were in the way of the alignment points, mostly on the left side of the column. Pushed the wires out of the way and in the process I must have loosened one of the wires that goes into the ignition bundle (left side of column, opposite side of where the key gets inserted). Thankfully I had the wiring diagrams and time, it took forever to figure out where the loose wire was. Ended up being the orange wire.

That's the first time I've used wiring diagrams, they are worth their weight in gold!

Best of luck finding the problem.

    Horn Quit... Any thoughts 900

    Dear Jeff,

Good p.m. and hope this finds you well. Another possibility - apart from corrosion - involves the intermittent wiper relay. According to the Wiring Diagram 1993 940, the power supply (yellow wire) to the horns goes from fuses 15 & 16, to the intermittent wiper relay (same row as the bulb failure relay, #3 in that row)to the wiper control stalk, and thence via a connector (C-2) and via a splice to the horns. (The splice allow power to go to the windshield wiper motor and to the left headlight wiper motor [if so equipped]). The other wire on the horns, (blue, with a black tracer) goes to the horn contact ring, in the steering column assembly.

Thus, if the intermittent wiper relays fails, that seems likely to kill the horns.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook

    Same problem awhile back.

Pull off the horn buttons. Clean the contacts.
Otherwise, clean the contacts under the bumper, but if you have no voltage, your problem is most likely corrosion at the horn button.

    Good Luck,

    Tom
