replacing windlace 120-130

Does anybody know if it's possible to replace the windlace tube that runs along the edge of the headliner around the top frames of the doors? Is it possible to re-cover the rubber tube peice with cloth and then re-insert it into where it was before, or does this entirely require just re-installing the headliner? If it's the later case, I guess it's just a project that one might as well wait to do a whole headliner replace project on.

Thanks,

- V

Removing/replacing the windlace is a separate operation from the headliner, which can stay in place. No reason I can think of that the old rubber couldn't be recovered. Or you can buy it new from Veteranprodukter. JC Whitney used to carry a reasonable substitute, but it's NLA.

The indlace is, indeed, involved with the headliner.
New windlace is available from Restoration Specialties,

      Jim, we cross-posted...

On a 122, the windlace goes on after the headliner is installed. It just kinda tucks in, instead of tacking on PV-style. No need to remove the headliner.

Well on botha my 122s it sure LOOKED like it was involved with the headliner...
Still, Restoration Specialties has more of this stuff than you can shake a stick at.

          replacing windlace 120-130

I just replaced the windlace on both sides of mine with replacements from http://www.swedishtreasures.com/1201.html . You could sew your own, but the replacements from Swedish Treasures have the factory V-shaped plastic sewn on to them. This is what keeps the windlace firmly in place in a few areas. The replacement did not involve the headliner (mine was in perfect condition), but did require removal of the rear seat and side panels. The windlace is stapled to strips on the door posts under the side panels. As stated, the V-shaped plastic holds the windlace in place, but not only in the headliner area, also in the front kickpanel area, in the windsheild trim area and under the trim in the upper seatbelt mount area as well. All other area's need to have the plastic removed (really easy). These area's incude where it goes under the trim on the dash and where it gets stapled to the inner door post. I removed my old windlace as carefully as possible in order to use it as a template for trimming the plastic.

All in all, it went pretty quickly and looks SO much better.

Oh, also, I made the mistake of assuming that the price included enough to do both sides but it doesn't, you have to order two.

Hope this sheds some light on the whole process.

          Christopher

use a thin knife blade then? 120-130

Thanks Chris, and all others above.

So one just uses a thin and dullish knife blade to jam the new windlace into the existing seam? The plastic you speak of kind of acts as a jam so that it does not come back out?

How much did two sets of replacement run you also?

            - V

I used a 1.50" wide putty knife that had the corners rounded off.

Yes, the plastic V is to "lock" the windlace in place.

I paid $31ish dollars per side. Maybe a little spendy, but then again I was very happy with the product and they installed just like the factory pieces.
