Our stock radio (I do not know the model but AM/FM Cassette) does not display the radio station and will not play the left speakers unless the volume is turned up.
My wife wants a AM/FM CD and I am also considering Satelite radio. I looked at Circuit City but the web page is having problems.
So my question. What would be a good solution?? I do not want to cut wires just get a plug in kit. I do not want to alter the dash. I guess I want a good Plug 'n Play setup.
Thanks!!!

I have a 1989 740GL and understand that most aftermarket radios will fit just fine (it may need an adapter, but the old radio pulls out just fine). I just looked at and ordred an Alpine, so I should know for sure within the next few days. Email me in a few days and ask again. cal.ratcliff@wachovia.com.

Well, I got my new deck today and it wasn't as easy as expected. I do not yet have the Volvo adapter kit so that may make it easier. I have read a number of the other posts and I might just pay the $75 and let Best Buy or Circuit City do the installation which, after considering $15 for the Volvo installation kit isn't too bad.

The easiest solution is to buy a deck at Best Buy and have them install it for FREE. They install all decks over $99 for no charge, except, of course, for a harness, which runs another $15 or so. There are several good decks to choose from, I promise. And no, I don't work for BB, and neither do I take my own advice. Last week I installed a deck I purchased from a local repo agent for $50. The wiring wasn't difficult, as they are all easily identifiable. The 8 speaker wires are clearly marked, as are the remaining 5 wires. The difficult part for me was mounting it, which definitely involves some work. Save yourself the trouble and go to Best Buy!

I put a new Alpine 4-channel in-dash CD in our 88 last year.
Get the Volvo mounting kit, and all will be well. You get a new plug to connect to the factory harness with all the wires labeled. You do have to connect the wires yourself, but a cheap Radio Shack set of terminals and a crimp tool would make this easy enough. You connect the wiring kinda like this:
New Stereo splices Adapter Plug
11111=================< <===============22222
11111=================> >===============22222
I'm not trying to show any specific connection here, just that you'll have to connect the adapter plug to the back of the new radio prior to installing. It's really not too hard to get 3/4 of it done. "1" is the plug or permanent wiring on the back of the new stereo. "2" is the adapter plug from the Volvo adapter kit.
The kit will also include a faceplate to fit your dashboard. Most places sell the kit for about $15. It's definitely worth it. Now as in the other answer, you won't be quite done. The rear speaker wires are powered from an amplifier and have a separate plug. This plug is under the dash near the ignition switch.
If you are not comfortable doing this install there are stereo shops that do it all. Our local shop gets $65.

If you are trying to install an aftermarket radio, you will have to cut a few wires. There is a factory integration harness and it hooks the new radio up to everything (power, front speakers, illumination lead, etc.) except the rear speakers and is very easy to wire as everything is labeled. To do these, you need to go to the stock amp, located near the steering column (follow the black six-pin cable from the stock radio to the amp). Then, you need to cut the wires that run the speakers (brown and yellow if I remember correctly) and wire them to the new head unit. The dash kit does cause the stereo to be pushed out a bit but it isn't too bad.
As head units go, I would recommend an Alpine CDA-9826 because it is XM ready and you really can't go wrong with Alpine products. They are just high quality.
Good luck,
Eamon

I have a 1991 Volvo 740 Turbo and I put in a Kenwood Mp3/CD player about 3 years ago (KDC-MP8017) I had a friend help me out as there were more wires going into the stock cassette player then the new deck took. Well we figured out something (more like he did) and it works fine, also I put in some subs in the back of the wagon, because only the dash speakers worked. Never a problem and it works out great.
My girlfriend has a 2001 S40 and I got her a XM Radio and we both think it is great! I bought it on Ebay from a dealer, all you need is the Radio head unit and a car kit which includes a cassette adapter and a small very strong magnetized antenna to mount on the trunk or roof. With the head unit you can also get an adapter for home use, so you can use it in the car and at home. The music is great, so many channels and never trouble with a signal. I am from New York and we have driven down to South Carolina, then another time to West Virginia and no problems. The service is only $9.99 a month.
