#@$#$# Check Engine idiot light

I just got my '89 240 back from the local Volvo wizard, and it's running great.
I've been driving it for months with the Check Engine light on; twice it has come on when I've been on a high-speed trip of more thhan 50 miles.

However, I had to take it on a trip last night and the check engine light came on, like clockwork, about 50 miles out. Car still running great.

I'll do the reset mode (which I learned here, thanks), but can someone offer a suggestion as to why this damned light keeps coming on even though the car runs well? I plan on asking the local guy; I have infinite trust in him. Just wanted to know if anyone else has an idea.

190,000 miles, so it's still a baby.

mike

    what are the codes?

rumour has the lh 2.4 has 3 adaptive cycles, idle, short trip-50 miles or less, and long trip, more than 50. i ran into this when a 16v i was working on would set a 232 and just run awful after a 200 mile trip. reset the adaptation and it would be fine for another 200 miles. replaced the amm and the problem never occured again. after talking this car a while later, a volvo master tech mentioned the cycles. it may be just a rumour. good luck, chuck.

when the light comes on, read the codes as in the faq's
    http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm
Let us know what codes you get and we'll have a better idea

Gee..I guess giving you the codes would be helpful...how dumb of me.

I did the first check and got 1-1-3, indicating fuel injector fault, according to the list in my Haynes manual. I then checked again and got 2-2-1, which says fuel system compensating for rich or lean mixture at cruise.

BTW, I should point out that I'm not at all mechanical. So though I appreciate Porkface's response, I didn't understand a word of it. Can Porkface, or someone else, translate? Thanks!

Basically what he was saying is that the computer may behave differently depending on how far you have driven since each start up.

Both codes are indicating a mixture problem.
At that age testing the O2 sensor would be a good idea.
Also check all intake hoses for even the smallest of cracks . any air leaks in the engine side of the AMM will cause a lean condition. even a dried up oring on th e dipstick can do it. Check the accordian hose carefully( the bendy hose between the AMM and the throttle body ).Could also be a severly clogged fuel filter.

Last but not least the AMM could be bad, but I'd check the others first. Look in the faq's http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/ for instructions on how to check these things . it is quite easy.
