transmissions 200 1980

I am going to be doing a b21ft+i build up this year and i will most likely exceed the hp capacity of my stock m46 transmission. Does anyone have any suggestions on what transmissions i can look at? I would like it to be a trany that i can switch in without very much modification. I was reading a post where someone was saying that a shop was going to put a 740 trany in his auto 240, will a 740 Standard trany bolt into my 240? Is it much better then the 240?

any input would be much appreciated.

Jon

You could always put a mustang T-5 tranny in it. That would hold any amount of horsepower you can make, and shift nice too. Also many aftermarket parts are available, and they are easy to work on.

That should be all the info you need.

I've always heard that the M46 is strong enough to put up with just about anything you can hook to it. I certainly haven't seen too many failures of these, and the ones that did get damaged were due to oil leaks, not excess torque. Well, one kid broke reverse doing burnouts in high school... but that's avoidable.

Reportedly the M47, the true 5-speed trans in the 87+ cars, is a bit less sturdy. I wouldn't put one of those behind a built engine.

The M46 ought to be able to take anything your engine can dish out. A synthetic gear lube is probably recommended, like Redline MTL.

The few 740T's that were manual-equipped always used this transmission, as well as the 240T's. Note that depsite being the same gearbox, the 740T application uses a much longer shifter- you still need a 240 shift linkage.

Turbobricks.com has lots more info on how people are getting driveline components to survive behind their monster motors.

hi there. i read over on turbobricks website above 250hp they use toyota supra tranny and rear end. there are adapter kits avalible. most 740 and 240 trannys are the same or close and wont do 250hp for the long run, as i understand it.

Over on TurboBricks, it's the smoke they're blowing that causes most all failures; whatever you read, do something else.
You won't get to 250 BHP anyway, so stop worrying.

Here is a list of some of my mods, i think i will hit well over 250hp in end. B21FT- bored and rehoned with oversized pistons(getting done at my local speed shop). Shaved down head with high performance head gasket. Port and polish with larger valves put in. S80 intercooler with custom fabricated mounts and tubing. 90+ exhaust manifold shaved to fit Garret T3. APC Blow off valve(for turbo lag) custom mounted. 3 inch straight through exhaust. ipd turbo cam with adjustable timing gear. Mega squirt, my buddy had it on his and is going to give me a good deal on it. MSD ignition, but im chucking the crappy spark plug wires, they melt on turbos. b230 intake manifold and throttle body. Cone filter intake mounted just behind grill. And a few other mods that i am to lazy to write down. note i know i havent gone into detail with these mods but i am not a newbie to mechanics, just a lazy typer.

yea i think the supra trany is the way to go, im just having trouble finding one at this point, but i think i will keep searching. I know that unless i have a clutch that really slips my engine will just tear through the m46. Thanks for the info

      Jon
