FYI: The font size is controlled on your computer -- not by the web site. (click the "View" dropdown at the top of your browser, select "Text Size", then choose your preferred size.)

The 'Text Size' menu-option on your browser only controls incremental additions / reductions to the base font-size specified in the source-code of the web-page. I always leave this alone at Medium - the default.

This new font-design is a definite change of either FONT, FONT SIZE or both in the basic HTML of the web-page. Earlier, if we embedded html in our posts (e.g. for Bold, Italics, href links etc), these would appear in a smaller font/size than the surrounding text. That peculiarity dosn't exist any longer. The text size earlier too was much larger and more difficult to read.

You can see an example of the earlier text-size by checking out the FAQs - which dont seem to have their FONT changed yet. Check this link to compare.

I'm confused by that, as I haven't sen any recent changes. I've been using simple html (as above) in my posts for some time now, with Italicized, Bold, etc always being the same size as the surrounding text

Oh, I see, you meant in the FAQ -- I hadn't noticed. The font size in the forum is the same as it ever was.
