make sure your new tranny is an “L” for lock out. AW70L, 71L, 72L.
I think you meant to say "Lockup." Starting around '89 in the 740 (non-turbo) cars, they started offereing Transmissions & Torque Converters that would lock together above a designated speed, and thus provide the same fuel economy as a stick-shift (manual trans) vehicle. If you are receiving an AW-70L to replace the original AW-70 in your 240, make sure that it comes with the torque converter from the donor vehicle.
The AW-72L was offered to 700/900 vehicles that had the B234F 16-valve engine in them (somewhat rare). The shift points on the AW-72L are very different from a 70 or 71 because the Torque and HP curves are very different from the standard 8-valve turbo & non-turbo engines.
Of note, the 240 did not get the Lockup trannys till '93 if my information is correct. I've got an AW-70L (and torque converter) on my workbench from an '89 740 that I'll be installing in my '87 240 soon. I'm changing the tailshaft bushing first, and cleaning sediment from the filter, pan, and pan magnet.
God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.
