Auto trans shifter out of place, no reverse light? 200

I have a 90 240 wagon with about 185,000 mile on it.

I 've had a sloppy shifter for some time and some problems I've had include the following:

- the indicator light for the position of the shifter( where it is P R D etc.)
is out of alignment of actual gear the car is in, when in reverse the reverse lights don't come on.

- I' m also occasionally having problems with the tranny not down shifting.
(when I come to a complete stop and then accelerate the car seems as though it is in 2nd gear and very sluggish)

I've checked the bushings in the linkage and replace one that was rotted out and sloppy, though I haven't adjusted the linkage itself.
The shifter is now solid but still out of adjustment.

What would need to be adjusted to get the indicator in line and would this be responsible for the downshifting problem or are they separate.

I flushed the tranny about a year ago and am a heavy driver so am going to flush again soon.

Any info on adjusting this or a possible fix would be great.
Thanks for any info.

Auto trans shifter out of place, no reverse light? 200

You've addressed probably 1/2 of what's wrong. Replace the other bushing, understanding that one end or the other of that linkage is likely to be a royal pain. Sometimes the pin comes out easy, but if it doesn't it's ugly.

The linkage itself wears out at the end of the rod, where the L-shaped piece is riveted to the end of the rod. Excess play becomes "fell apart" without any warning.

The other serious cause of this trouble is a failed or failing transmission mount. This lets the engine fall down and back, misaligning the neutral safety/backup light switch.
The mount is cheap (<$10) and not really hard to replace though you need to be able to jack up the car, and then jack up the transmission while the crossmember is removed. You'll need 17mm and 19mm sockets to do this.

    Good luck!
