Trouble with Tail/Brake/Backup Lights 200

My "project" car is coming along and teaching me much in the process (as well as MANY of you).

Yesterday evening I was messing around with the parking lights (had to clean the surfaces and bend the contacts a little) and got them working.

I noticed that when I applied the brakes, the 3rd brake light was illuminated, but the two lights that share the parking lights did not.

Also, the backup light on the left (driver's side) works fine. The passenger side does not. The bulbs are all testing out ok.

Any ideas?

Todd :-)

What are the bulb numbers for the parking/brake lights?

Thanks.

Trouble with Tail/Brake/Backup Lights 200

FOr the backup lights, the problem has to be in the taillights themselves. Try a different bulb and socket on the right side. Try cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser in both taillights- the left one I believe makes the circuit path to get to the right one, and it only connects if the connector is plugged in securely. The pin I believe has to connect to the flex circuit on the left light, then go out on another wire to the right light.

I just had 2 non-working brake lights in my 89. Turned out to be lousy connections at both sockets. Clean the flex circuit, file the three pins, and make sure the white socket is on the right side light.

Clean inside each socket and get new 1157 bulbs (dual filament) for the brake lights. The single lights, like the backup lights, are the 1156. The parking light singles are a different number I can't remember off hand, but take one to the store and match it up if needed. Common bulb any parts store should have.

If the bulbs come out white, yellow, cloudy, or cracked, it's from water getting into the housing. Seems to happen to the left one first, and the only permanent fix is a new assembly ($$$). Try drilling a 1/16 hole up into the outer corner of the brake light in order to drain water from it. This will extend the life of the housing for years potentially.

Good luck!

Trouble with Tail/Brake/Backup Lights 200

Rob,

Thanks for the quick response. I tested the brake lights without the parking lights on and they seemed to work ok. They were just dim. I will try some new bulbs.

The backup light on the passenger side. The copper that makes contact with the little silver tabs on the bulb holder seems to be wore down to the black plastic underneath. Is it possible to open the plastic covering and somehow "solder" the indention in the copper stuff?

Todd :-)
