Howling noise 200 1988

Hey guys,

I Have an 88 240 DL with a 5 speed trans and 135k miles. Last week it started making a whistling sound at speeds of 45\55 mph that came and went. This week the whistling has changed to a deeper howling noise that occures at lower speeds, for example, comming to a stop, again it comes and goes. It sounds like it's comming from around the trans area but I'm not sure. The car runs great other than the intermittent noise. Any Ideas are greatly appreciated.

Ps: I also have an 87 240 DL auto trans

Center support bearing or driveshaft/driveline bearing is what is causing the noise. They are not too bad to do, be prepared to press out the old one and press in the new one if you chose to do it yourself. I think the Volvo's are just a light press fit. Also be warned that regardless if you put grease in there now or not it will only get worse and with the cold weather coming on, it will get worse faster. My opinion would be to spend the $30 or so on the part and then the few hours or less it takes to replace it. You should drop out the whole Drive Shaft (DS) to do this, mark everything well before you separate and put back exaclty how you removed it, or you will have problems as the DS is balanced.

Good luck dude and Party On!

Thanks for the info guys, I will try replacing the bearing. One question though, do you think it can go for another week befor replacing or do I need to get to a parts store and fix this week end.

I agree completely. One alternative is to find a junkyard car and change the whole driveshaft- could be cheaper than paying a shop for the pressing on and off of the old bearing.

Shouldn't be a hard or expensive job either way. The driveshaft does have to maintain alignment, so scribe some marks on it that won't be obscured by grease or handling before taking the two sections apart. IF you get a used one, just keep it all together. And bring newspapers to set the old shaft on while transporting it either way.

My guess would be your driveline support bearing is going bad. Mine made a whistling sound as it was going bad but the noise was constant not off and on. Try injecting some chassis grease into the bearing and see if it makes a difference in the sound.
