intercooler, factory or dealer installed ? 200

How do I figure out if my 84 242T has the factory intercooler or dealer installed ? Also why does this effect my clutch size ?

Factory intercooled cars have 3 relays on the driver's side just above the headlights to shut off AC and open the boost solenoid (240 version of turbo +)

The cars that had the intercoolers added at the dealers have a relay on the passenger's side inner fender that controls the boost solenoid.

As has been mentioned the factory cars from '84.5 also got a much heavier flywheel with a stronger clutch.

You know too much!
If I'm adding an IC kit to my 82, do I need the relays? And do you know what wiring goes with that?

And while I know the trans can interchange, is there any other issue with swapping the flywheel from an M47 car into my M46 equipped 245? I have to say, the apparently original 182K clutch in the wagon seems to be doing just fine. Even towed a 2000 lb trailer last week with zero issues. Do you think there's a benefit to the bigger clutch for normal driving?

Thanks!

awww shucks, (blush) All I know is from years of hanging out around groups like this and a little expermentation. No you don't need the relays, the best performance is to be gained with the use of a G-Valve. I don't have the link handy but if you type it into Google you will get a huge amount of information.

In reality the heavier flywheel is somewhat of a hinderance, more rotating mass equals a hit on engine performance. I had planned to go with a stock flywheel and performance clutch if the clutch in my old 244T project ever wore out but got sidetracked by other priorities.

John at http://www.v-performance.com/ has a good selection of clutch plates and discs for the 200s even though he is more round fender oriented. I'd enjoy the extra boost 'till the stock clutch wears out then get a mid performance setup and stick with the stock flywheel.
Have fun.

the flywheels are different on the factory cars. the dealer kits did not have a flywheel in the box. without pulling the trans, i don't know how to tell the difference. maybe with a patient parts person at the dealer with your engine number, on the timing cover, and the engine serial number, from the block, driver's side, below the head. or, the window sticker from when it was new. good luck, chuck.

Hmmm, early 84's were without, but late 84's had the factory IC, the big stepped flywheel (identical to M47 equipped cars) and the bigger 9" clutch. Usually, a dealer intercooler install included "intercooled" on the trunk.

If you want even more confusion, the first IC 242T's were the flatnose homologation 83's and they had the small clutch.
