75 242 electronic ignition disassembly 120-130

I recently reinstalled my 75 electronic distributor into my b18 122s. I have been getting intermittent bucking, stalling, and lack of power. If i step on the gas too quickly it loses it for a second and backfires and takes off when i back off the throttle. I believe it too be a bad pickup coil/pulse generator in the dizzy. Everything else in the ignition system checks out ok. Timing is about 30 total advance with no pinging.

Taking a reading with a DMM (digital multi meter) the resistance is around 300 ? sometimes and goes all over the scale other times, increasing almost as if it had capacitance and was charging.

Does anybody know what value the reading should be? "It should be steady at least with no rotor movement, correct?

I would like to replace the pickup with a new one but i'm unsure of how to remove from dizzy. I've removed the 2 screws that hold the plate as well as the c clip above the metal 4 pointed star and seem to be stuck.

How do i remove the metal star that rotates in order to remove the pickup? Is it permanently affixed to the shaft? Does it require the hold it in a vice trick and hammer used when disassembling a points type, or just a little more persuasion?

Much respect,

lots of penetrant and paitience, along with 2 screwdrivers to pry it up off the shaft. there is a VERY SMALL pin that locates it to the shaft, easy to lose. also, the star will rotate on it's hub. when it's right, 1 point of the star will line up with the pickup. if the cap clip hangs over while the engine is cranking, like trying to find tdc or something, the star can get grabbed by the clip and get spun out of time. does weird things in the ignition. good luck, chuck.

Thank you kind sir.

I finally got a look at a Haynes, and it seems to agree with you, albeit with a lot less information, just a picture. My PB Blaster is sitting on the shelf at home and plenty of screwdrivers. I was able to pick up a new pickup coil from Kragen Auto Parts for $21.99. The dealer wanted over $150, ouch. Hopefully this will be the cure to my ailment.

take care,
