240 auto trans.

89 240 trans has started a whinnig whistling type noise as it shifts down to low speeds from cruise. I discovered the fluid was about 2 quarts low so I topped it back up and tightend up the line that was leaking that runs to the radiator but Im still getting the noise. Is it getting ready to go? Im thinking I caused damaged by not adding fluid sooner.

Get under the car (safely, please!) and grab the output shaft of the transmission. If you can move the driveshaft by hand vertically or side to side, you've got a worn out tailshaft bushing.

A new bushing and seal is about $40 from Volvo, less aftermarket. A Volvo shop (and probably NOBODY else) should have a cool little puller tool for getting the old bushing out without removing the whole back end of the transmission.

Otherwise there is a gasket and a bunch of M8 bolts to remove and the whole housing comes off, and the bushing is driven out with a hammer and drift. Observe the location of the oiling holes in the bushing and also the depth that it's inserted to.
Messy job but essential to the car's survival.
    Good luck with it!
