Horrible MPG in my recently gained 740GL 700

My '93 740(not a US model, driven by a K-Jetronic non-turbo engine) has a horrible MPG of 6.8 in city. It is said the car has been a gas for long.

The engine had just been rebuilt and it is powerful. The auto transmission works OK except a bit sticky.

Could anyone has any thought on it? Or I should post this at the 240 forum as no 740 in US us a K-jetronic? Any suggest is appriciated.

Mark

There's no black smoke, the plugs are dry. The only thing found today is that the tube connecting to an injector has almost unnoticeable leakage. I will fix it tomorrow but am still unsure can this small leak be responsible for the terrible amount of gas.

Make sure you have a locking gas cap! 6.8 MPG would probably exhibit lots of black smoke! A class 8 highway truck pulling 80,000 lbs. can almost do that! (5-7 mpg.)

Start out by replacing the oxygen sensor. Look over the state of the rest of the regular tune-up parts ie: plugs, cap, wires, air filter. Pay attentioin to the condition of the plugs, a wet one could indicate an injector problem.
