which radiator fits a 79? 200 1979

I need to find a radiator for my 79 245, hopefully used and inexpensive. Does anyone know from which year 240 I can pull one that will fit? It is a manual shift, by the way. Thanks in advance.

I wanted to just reiterate that you really should get an all metal radiator. They are vastly superior to the plastic tank radiators in terms of longevity. Plus, if you get a radiator with plastic tank, you can't get it repaired should the tanks start leaking as you could with a metal one.

Good luck with whatever route you decide to take.

A Volvo all-metal radiator - Yes.

An aftermarket all-metal radiator - I'm not so sure...

I guess a lot depends upon how long you plan to keep the car.

I've read too many reports here about ill-fitting aftermarket radiators. Also brands like Nissens crapping out after a year or two. IMHO - Although it's more expensive buy a Volvo rad, preferably a new one, but a tested used one is probably okay.

BTW - I have a 1990 with its original Blackstone metal/plastic still going strong. IMO - A pretty damn good radiator!

I think most rads from a 240 and also 740 series will fit. The ATF entries can be capped or ignored if it's for an automatic.

Double check by going to FCPGroton's or IPD's site and compare part numbers.

Pick and pulls may have some good rads with fair prices and guarantees.

Using a used radiator is a mixed bag at best.

If I were you, I'd look up a local radiator shop in the phone book and see if they have an all metal radiator that will fit your car. There isn't anything particularly fancy about the 240 radiator.

Since your car is a stick, you can use a radiator from an automatic should you choose to get a used one. Just leave the tranny cooling lines unhooked. It won't leak coolant or anything.

I'll bet though, that you can find a good radiator pretty cheap at a local shop though. Maybe they would even repair/resolder your current one, provided yours is an all metal radiator (which it would be if it is the original one).

Here in Portland, I got a lifetime warrantee on a radiator from "Mac’s Radiator" for under $150. Should anything ever go wrong with it again, I won't have to pay a cent.

Good luck!

thanks everyone. 200 1979

Thanks for all of your thoughts. Taking a bit from each suggestion, I have found an all metal "new" looking "used" "aftermarket" radiator to fit may "genuine volvo." Everything has fit and tested well, apart from dealing with a stripped fan shroud screw. (The most worthless waste of an hour spraying, tapping, sawing, and drilling I am sure you all have dealt with.) As for the life expectancy, If this $50 radiator craps out in two years, at least I will be on schedule to replace the antifreeze. Thanks again.
