Hey guys I got a good one for ya. I just got an opel gt and I'm trying to liven it up some. The stock engine only makes a lame 90 hp, yeah it's gotta go. BUT I've got a 83 volvo 245 sitting in my yard that runs great and I'm thinking about putting it's engine in the opel. I want to get up to between 200-250 hp in this car and the stock non turbo engine only puts out about what 135 if I'm not mistaken. Right now I'm thinking of rebuilding it first of course, and then putting a t-4 turbo on it with and air to air intercooler. The parts I'm having a hard time finding is, an aggresive cam, I found a street cam at idp, but I want street/strip. I need a larger bore throttle body, bigger injectors and a modified computer. So any suggestions on places to find some great performance parts would be great.

the volvo engine is heavier, the turbo adds weight, the bmw 5 irs waaay too big for the car and there's no history of the opel being weak or slow in the engine, rear end or any other place. there's a reason gm sold a bunch in europe, long after they pulled the plug here in the states, they make good cars. getting out was gm's idea, not opel's. the money you spend on getting this mutt to run and drive right would be better spent on keeping the opel all opel. and probably a good bit cheaper. how much do you think it would cost to cobble the car to the bmw irs? all that measuring, welding and cutting ain't cheap. want to beef up a volvo powered 2 seater-buy a marcos. be a little more practical. and so it goes, chuck.

They go alright, I get 90mph out of a stock B21 that's had it's head blown off twice, and should have been crushed. Since it's such a strong engine, it should be able to take the strain of a few modifications. I know that's not all that fast, but in better condition, with a more agressive cam, a bit of porting and different manifolds, there'd be a lot more power on tap.
In Australia you only have to worry about Emissions when you fit a non-standard engine, so you can pretty much do what you want once the motor's in the car.

Yep, it's crazy. Actually, the 1.9 liter Opel motor kicked out 102hp with 115 lbs of torque at 3000 rpms. Methods of figuring horsepower were a bit more archaic then, so you could reasonably estimate that the original specs could map out at 110hp using today's technology.
The Opel GT is a very lightweight unibody construction known for it's superb handling abilities. Put that heavy motor in it, and you've made a sow's ear out of a silk purse, or chicken shit out of chicken salad. Not the way to go! Also, unless your 245 is a turbo, adding a turbo just isn't plausible.
I have a 1971 Opel GT, bored out 50 over with lightweight, flat top pistons, a performance cam, and dual webers. Don't know the horsepower numbers; don't care. I just know that it goes like hell. There are tons of opel gt web sites out there to help you beef up the stock motor, or even buy a newer 2.2 liter. Check out Opel GT source for one. If you were intending on spending an obscene amount of money to a) modify the car, and b) build a high performance Volvo motor, and then install it, I think boring and porting and polishing would be cheaper and wiser on the Opel motor.
Just my two cents...and probably worth about that,

Thanks Chris. I drove the GT around a while in mountatns of New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana one summer. It's been driven cross country a few times and now resides on Maui. Great car.

Well it is possible to turbocharge an N/A motor isn't it? I've heard talk on Turbobricks about using that setup to create high compression/low boost setups, with some complicated sounding engine management to deal with it.

The other day while surfing the net I came across a picture of a Datsun 510 with a MAZDA ROTARY in it ..... Hmmmmmm 250 hp in a very SMALL package ..... now where can I find a 122 rolling Chassis .................

What about ba 122 with a T5R 850 engine in it. easy 300horse plus. ctually I should get around to just finishing my 120 with a hot injected B20.Instead I just spend too much time working. Driven nigh on 3000 miles in my "new" 940 in the last 12 days

Hey Pete ... that sounds interesting too .... problem would be finding a transmission to mount it fore and aft.
Decided against the Injection for my car ... too much hassle without compensatory performance improval. Works great with the HS6s and works out to 32.2 miles per Imperial(UK) gallon... 27.6 miles to the US gallon.... and getting the power to the ground for Autocross is problematic at this point in time .... inside rear tire can easily go up in smoke .... don't have a spare 4.10:1 LSD laying around do you ??

I really wanted to use the volvo engine because they are reliable and last forever even if you use them hard. That and it would be cheaper to build a motor I already got sitting around anyway. I know the vaxhaul swap is easy, but it's not cheap, by the time I get one in the states I'll have at least 6 grand in the motor! I found a place that sells engine rebuilding parts and offers low compression pistons so putting a turbo on a b23 is not a problem. I will have to build a custom exhaust manifold anyway in order to clear the frame rails. Basically it's not going to take much to make a 2000lb car fly like hell, but I need some hard core race parts to build the motor up to get it to my expect hp leval. You think this is bad, I'm ripping the rear end out of the bmw 5 series I got sitting and stuffin it in the opel too, because the stock rearend is very weak! And the beamer is indepent rear, so it will handle better too.
