'94 940 turbo. intermittent no start. 900

This actually isnt about my car but another car I'm working on. It's a '94 940 turbo. It first came to me with a crank-no start condition. The fuel pumps were not running. Very reminiscent of a fuel pump relay failure which i've had happen on my own car. I replaced the relay, the car runs, so I sent the guy on his way. Then I got a phone call that the car stalled again and wouldnt restart. 20 minutes later it started. Now, what other relays can cause the fuel pumps to quit? Fuel injection relay?

HAH... Turns out to be the crank sensor. Took the car for a ride, and it finally acted up. check engine light came on and the car died. Started again 5 minutes later and drove back to shop. If I have the car idling, and I tug on the wire going to the crank sesnor, she shuts off. No codes in the ECU though, which kinda surprised me.

    Dear anarchy x34,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. I'll bet the Crank/RPM Sensor - mounted atop the tranny bell housing, just behind the engine, at the 10 o'clock position (as you face the engine) - is failing. The sensor reads flexplate/flywheel rotation, and signals the fuel pumps to keep working, after the 1-2 second fuel pump "spin up", when the ignition is switched "on".

When the sensor "cuts out", the fuel pump(s) stop(s). In the event of a collision - that stops the engine and starts a front-end fire - rhe RPM sensor signal loss stops the fuel pumps from feeding the flames.

The RPM sensor wiring deteriorates over time. It is an easy fix, see the FAQs under FEATURES, above.

Hope this helps. Post back on results.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook

This was something I had considered. But I wasnt getting the priming pulse from the pump when the key is first turned on.
