Hot or cold, it sputters and even cuts out very briefly if I tromp on the gas. Sounds like it's running on 3 cylinders. Runs fine and seems to have normal power at higher RPMs and under load. Please help if you can.

I'm having the same exact problem with my 88 740 turbo. It usually starts up fine, but will die after about a minute of being idle. If I do put it into gear and start driving off, it will sputter at low speeds and sometimes just stall when i come to a stop. Once car warms up, it drives fine. Its at the mechanic right now and he still has no clue what could be the problem. I have heard a bad hall sensor can cause this problem as well, air leaks.

That sounds similar to what I was experiencing with my '86 760T. The most common causes of those symptoms seem to be:

1) Vacuum leak: check all lines and around the intake manifold. Also check for vacuum leak at the injectors.

2) Dirty/clogged fuel injectors and/or throttle body.

3) Tune-up parts: fouled plugs, broken plug wires, worn rotor/cap, etc.
